Garden Route
Garden Route – South Africa
Along South Africa's southern coast lies one of the world's loveliest coastal gardens.
Here are beautiful amber-coloured rivers, chains of lakes, wild and unspoiled stretches of rocky coast, mountains covered in indigenous forests, golden beaches washed by the restless surf of the Indian Ocean, secluded bays and charming coastal villages.
The Garden Route follows the coastline of the Indian Ocean, and the inland is framed by a belt of mountain ranges. This beautiful area receives its name from the abundance of lakes, rivers, lagoons, beaches and indigenous green vegetation and forests and is another of South Africa's most popular tourist attractions. It is a 780-kilometer (485 mile) stretch of the N2 highway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. The highlight of this route is the 227 kilometers (155 miles) that spans from the Great Brak River (just east of Mossel Bay) to Humansdorp, near Port Elizabeth.
This paradise of trees, flowers and forests includes the city of George and seaside Knysna; where a steam train linking the two cities winds through spectacular scenery. Rich in marine life, secluded beaches and blue lagoons, the Garden Route is a favorite destination for local and overseas holidaymakers. Plettenberg Bay is probably the most fashionable of this region's coastal resort centers, well known for its sun-drenched, golden beaches. The area is blessed with 320 days of sunshine a year. Knysna is also a most attractive and popular resort town. Knysna’s motto is 'This fair land is the gift of God', a fitting testament to the beauty of lagoon, forest and coastal countryside. Oudtshoorn’s Cango Caves are one of the great wonders of the world with the unique limestone formations with beautiful colours lying in the Swartberg Mountain Range in a limestone belt...
Attractions along the Garden Route encompass a wide variety from historic sites to scenic vistas, and beaches to nature reserves. To make the most of the area one needs to stray from the national N2 highway and explore the towns, villages and resorts en route. A fun way of enjoying the scenery is to ride on the Outeniqua Choo-Choo vintage steam train between George and Knysna. There are also great recreational opportunities to mesmerize active holidaymakers, from bungee jumping and water sports, to hiking trails.
On the lake with a beautiful view of the lake are numerous accommodations from B&B to apartments to hotels. The better the view the more expensive accommodation will be.
